How to Do Your Engagement Session
(Spoiler: You’re Already Doing It Right)
Hi. It’s me. Your photographer.
The third wheel who will soon be telling you to walk, stop, laugh, spin, kiss, whisper something mildly inappropriate, and then do it all again. If you’re here because you’re engaged (!!!) and thinking, “What do we actually DO during engagement photos?” — this post is for you.
Good news: you don’t need modeling experience, stiff poses, or a Pinterest degree. You just need each other and a willingness to jump in.
1. Relax. Truly. This Is Not a Performance.
First things first: take a breath.
You are not being graded. There is no right or wrong. No one is judging your hands, your smile, or how you stand.
Engagement sessions are meant to feel like: a really good date, with a tiny bit of guidance, and a camera quietly third-wheeling
The more relaxed you are, the more natural and connected your photos will feel. Come ready for fun, movement, and a little chaos—and trust me to handle the rest.
2. Prompts > Poses (So Keep Going Until I Say Stop)
My sessions are prompt-led, not pose-led. That means I’ll give you something to do, not a statue to become.
Here’s the most important rule of all:
👉 When I give you a prompt, keep doing it until I tell you to stop.
If I say:
- “Walk together” — don’t stop after three steps
- “Talk about your favorite memory” — don’t end after one sentence
- “Spin her” — don’t do it once and freeze
The magic happens between the moments. The laughs after the spin. The smile that sneaks in. The glance you didn’t plan. That’s the good stuff.
So keep moving. Keep laughing. Keep interacting. I promise I’ll tell you when we’re done.
3. Touch Each Other. Like… Always.
You’re engaged.
You’re in love.
This is not the time to leave space for Jesus. 😉
Hands should always be connected in some way:
- holding hands
- arms wrapped
- foreheads touching
- fingers grazing
- leaning in
- hips touching
If you ever feel unsure what to do, default to this rule:
Touch your person.
It instantly creates connection, comfort, and authenticity—and it shows so beautifully in photos.
4. This Is a Tiny, Fleeting Chapter—Jump In
These photos aren’t just “engagement pictures.”
They’re a snapshot of a very specific season of your life.
This version of you—engaged, excited, counting down, dreaming forward—will never exist again in quite the same way.
So jump in.
Laugh loud.
Pull each other close.
Be playful.
Be tender.
Be in it.
Don’t worry about how it looks. Worry about how it feels. The joy, connection, and love you bring will always translate through the lens.
5. Trust the Process (and Each Other)
My job is to guide you, watch for the light, and capture what’s real.
Your job is to show up as you are and enjoy being together.
If you do that—if you relax, keep moving, stay connected, and lean into the moment—your engagement session won’t just look beautiful.
It will feel like you.
And that’s always the goal.
